Wayward Filly Launches Late to Land Ryan Stable Double

23rd January 2023 | By Tony Wode

Former gun jockey Ron Ryan is excited about the future of raw talent Redavni after the filly’s storming win at Cluden Park on Saturday.

Having only her second race start, Redavni got up in the last stride in the 3YO Mdn Hcp (1000m) to give Ron and trainer wife Janel their second winner for the day after earlier scoring with Strategist.

Delighted with two winners from as many starters, Atherton-based Ryan was rapt with the way Redavni overcame her waywardness to win under top jockey Chris Whiteley.

“She’s a good filly… and she’s got a good future,” Ron Ryan said.

“The 1000m was probably not ideal but she was still good enough to get over them.

“When we got her as a late two-year-old she was supposed to be educated but she really knew nothing.

“It’s taken a lot to get her this far - shin soreness and a few other issues - and she’s still got a lot to learn.

“I take my hat off to Chris Jorgensen and his partners who bought her. He said do whatever you have to do and I just said, ‘let’s take our time’.

“Leeanne Buckingham rides her at home and she’s done a lot of work educating her.

“It’s not the strongest racing this time of year but she’s a good horse.”

The Ryan stable struck early in the day with Strategist who darted through a narrow gap for jockey Nathan “Grubby” Day to snatch a half-head win in the Carlton & United Breweries BM 60 Hcp (1000m).

Strategist has now won two in a row and Ryan thinks there’s more wins in store for the Written Tycoon gelding.

“Best ride ever. Great job by Grubby,” Ryan said.

“We’ve had the horse for 12 months and he’s had a lot of problems.

“He’s very well bred and I think he’ll go on with it.”

Townsville-based apprentice Isabella Teh was in top form too, landing another winning double.

Teh guided hot-pot Hell Of A Boy to a narrow win in the Hygain Cl6 Plate (1400m) for trainer Tony Comerford and roughie Foreverede in the Cl3 Hcp (1300m) for Stephen Bush.

But the light-weight hoop picked up an eight-day suspension for causing interference on Mango Tango Wine in the Maiden Hcp (1200m).

The suspension will take effect after next Sunday’s Townsville meeting.

Heavyweight jockey Carl Spry kept his winner a meeting run going with a polished win on Higher Realm for trainer Roy Chillemi in the Mitavite Open Hcp (1000m).

Spry has ridden a winner at each of his past eight race meetings.
