Third Time Lucky for Kenning and Bell with Home Bred Flyer

8th December 2022 | By Tony Wode

A decision to give former good race mare Roweiner one last go at stud is finally rewarding Cluden trainer Bill Kenning and his partner Julie Bell.

The couple will be out to continue a hot streak in the season’s early two-year-old races when Roweiner’s son, Roweiner’s Dance, chases his second victory in Saturday’ Brown Brothers 2YO Hcp (1000m) at Cluden on Saturday.

Kenning and Bell have also landed two wins with the smart Beau Rain in recent weeks, but the success of home-bred Roweiner’s Dance has been a major source of satisfaction.

“This is Roweiner’s third foal. The first two were little run out things that had one prep but were too small and we ended up giving them away as kids ponies. I had my doubts after the first two, but we said one more go and this fella could turn out pretty good,” Kenning said.

“The mare was well bred (Not A Single Doubt) and Arrowfield Stud where she came from said when we’re finished racing her they’d be interested in her. So we thought she was worthy of giving a go at breeding.

“The mother was small but this bloke seems to have thrown to the sire and is a nice big horse.

“When he matures a bit he could end up like Roweiner, she was a half handy mare.

“He jumps and runs, he’s a lovely quiet horse and good eater but he needs to spell after this one.

“I think he’ll be right in it again on Saturday.”

Roweiner’s Dance, by the former Godolphin sprinter Sidestep, is the other half of Kenning and Bell’s smart two-year-old duo, the other being the brilliant Beau Rain, who is unbeaten in two starts.

The two speedsters have always worked together and according to Kenning were naturals from Day 1.

“After they were broken in they spelled in Toowoomba and went to Hatchie (Lindsay Hatch) for three weeks to knock them into shape. He said back then they both could gallop so we knew they went alright early days.

“Beau Rain has been very good as well. He’ll spell with the other fella through the heat and they’ll both go towards the 2YO Classic.”

Kenning’s two-year-old success has capped off a strong start to the first half of the season with a small string.

The stable has led in seven winners in Townsville for a stunning Cluden winning strike rate of 33 per cent.

Last season’s premier jockey Lacey Morrison also looks set to continue her winning run at Cluden with a strong book of rides on the seven-event card.

Morrison’s top fancies include smart Cairns sprinter Smart Image in the C.U.B. Open Hcp (1200m), and Miss Seattle in the Mitavite BM70 Hcp (1400m).
