Doobie Stamps Himself a Carnival Prospect

22nd April 2026

Young Innisfail trainer Krystin Allender is keen to aim laid back youngster Mr Doobie at higher carnival goals after he reeled off a barnstorming win at Cluden Park on Tuesday.

The Dubious youngster, raced by prominent Mackay owner Kris Thomas’ Burgs Racing, staged a stunning last to first win in the Belle Property Longest Lunch 3YO Hcp (1200m).

Mr Doobie’s victory was his third from nine career starts and gave jockey Ivo Fry the second leg of a winning treble.

Allender, who prepares a small team in Innisfail, has always had a big opinion of Mr Doobie.

“Kris gave me Mr Doobie untried pretty much. He was just broken in when I got him and from the very beginning I liked him,” Allender said.

“He went shinny in his first prep like a lot of them do and I put him out. Kris has been great, he’s let me give the horse time.

“He said to me one day ‘if you get a couple of wins out of him I’ll get you better horses’ and I laughed and told him that I’ve got his best one.

“Everything I’ve galloped him with has not matched him at home.

“That turn of foot he’s got when he warms up is terrific.

“He’s my best horse. Just the way he works, his charisma. He’s just such a professional horse.

“This prep, and I told Kris, he’s working like he’s going to get a mile.

“He’s going to be a really nice horse and hopefully he might get through to the Guineas, fingers crossed.

“I couldn’t believe the price he got out to ($14) because the last race he had here I thought was stronger than today and in another two strides he would have won it.

“Ivo did a fantastic job. He didn’t panic. He thought he was in trouble at the 600m but he rode him a treat.”

Allender, originally from Victoria, has been building a small team in the north since relocating to Innisfail.

She said the quieter surrounds of Innisfail was ideal for her set up.

“I’m very thankful to the team I’ve got around me. I’ve got six horses in work and a very good bunch of staff.

“I’ve even managed a few days off here and there which is good because you need it.”

Fry boosted his Cluden tally to 13 wins this season when he also saluted on the Graham Hughes-trained pair Maximum Power in the Ladbrokes 0-60 Hcp (1000m) and Burraneer Buoy in the Hygain Open Hcp (1200m).

Fry has now won on six of his nine rides on Burraneer Buoy,

“It’s just a good little partnership. He’s a nice horse, he’s a big size horse and nothing really fazes him,” Fry said.

“He never seems to win by far but he just knows his craft and how to get the job done.

“I know it’s a big call but I think the Cleveland Bay could suit him. Light weight in a high speed race like that I reckon he could get home and be a chance.

“I thought Maximum Power was one of my better rides today and he did a great job to win.

“I do all of the work for Graham with my daughter Sasha. It’s a really good partnership. He’s super supportive. He gives me a lot of leeway with the horses and his horses are racing really well.

“And it was a nice win by Mr Doobie.

“Krystin has done a wonderful job with him. In fact my last four or five rides for the stable, the horses have raced out of their skin.“
