McGovern Stable Fires with Change of Environment

A shift to new facilities is already paying off for trainer Terry McGovern with his first Townsville winner and second stable victory in 10 days.

McGovern landed his break through Cluden win with Mymill in yesterday’s Hygain BM 55 Hcp (1000m), a little over a week after winning with Yabulu Princess at Bowen.

The hard-working trainer and horse breaker said his recent purchase of the former Lafferty property at Black River was a big factor in the wins.

“Everything there is fantastic and the horses are going well,” McGovern said.

“It’s a terrific set-up with 10 boxes, 1000m track, swimming facility, a roll and horse walker.

“I’ve got five in work and room for more and we’re ready to roll.

“Our focus will be on training and breaking in.”

Mymill, a $2500 bargain buy for McGovern Racing, enjoyed a  dream run in fourth under jockey Stephen Wilson before kicking clear half way down the straight to seal the win.

McGovern said he was looking forward to recent yearling purchases hitting the track later this year.

“We haven’t spent much on horses – mainly had cheap buys - but this year we’ve bought better yearlings.

“They’ve been outstanding in the way they’ve broken in and we’re expecting them to be very competitive.”

On a day when a number of potential carnival prospects were on show, Cairns trainer Fred Wieland landed a big winning double with the progressive Prime Ruler and Star Status.

Prime Ruler was sent out a $1.55 favourite and rallied under Ryan Wiggins’ hard riding to score his seventh win in 10 race starts in the Feed 2 Go Cl6 Hcp (1400m).

The four-year-old beat Brilliant Mind by a half-length with three-year-old Palencia turning in a slashing third a nose away.

Former South Australian stayer Star Status ground out a tough win over the brave Stubai in the Coco And Lo BM 70 Hcp (1900m).

The one time SA Derby runner finished best to land an important win to boost his rating for the upcoming Cups.

Promising four-year-old Bakuhatsu made it two wins from two starts at Cluden with an impressive display under 61kg in the Moss and Straw BM 55 Hcp (1000m).

Raced by Mick Waters and trained by Joanna Hassett, Bakuhatsu overcame a wide alley under the guidance of apprentice Cody Collis to beat Raise Da Vibration in a photo finish.
