Fry wraps up sweet weekend with win on Sugar Daddy
Cairns Cup winning hoop Ivo Fry capped a big 24 hours when he
stormed home on roughie Mr Sugar Daddy to win at Cluden Park on
Sunday.
On a high after his runaway win aboard Choir Boy in the Cairns feature
on Saturday, Fry produced another polished ride to steer Mr Sugar
Daddy ($15) to a surprise win in Thank You Michelle Payne Hcp
(1400m).
The 47-year-old celebrated his Cup win with a quiet dinner with daughter
and aspiring young jockey Sasha on Saturday night before packing his
bags and returning home for Sunday’s card.
It was Fry’s biggest race win since relaunching his career almost two
years ago after almost eight years in retirement.
“It has been a good 24 hours. I ran a lot of seconds over the carnivals
but the Cup was unreal and it was a nice win today,” Fry said.
“If someone had said I’d ride a Cup winner in the first couple of years
back I would have laughed at them. I probably would have said c’mon be
serious.
“It was never an expectation for me to come back full time riding. It was
all centred around Sasha and getting her going in an apprenticeship but
everything has come along leaps and bounds.”
A big part of the Fry’s success has been his winning partnerships with
Townsville trainer Graham Hughes and Ron and Janel Ryan who
prepare Choir Boy on the Atherton Tablelands.
To cap a big year, he won six races on the Hughes-trained Burraneer
Buoy who sealed the Queensland Provincial Horse of the Year with
seven victories for the season.
”Graham and myself, we’ve had a pretty good partnership and Burraneer
Buoy has been a top horse,” Fry said.
“We get along really well. He’s a beautiful old horse and he did a terrific
job. I’m looking forward to when he comes back.
“Ron and Janel have been big supporters of mine as well.

“Actually one of my early winners this time around was Choir Boy in the
Laura Cup last year.
“They’ve been really good to me over the last 12 months. I pretty much
ride everything for them out in the bush.
“Loyalty is a big thing in this game and I’m glad I could repay them with
the win on Choir Boy.
“I thought he was a great chance in the race after he won in Cairns but
especially after he bolted in at Innisfail at his last lead-up run.”
Mr Sugar Daddy’s win for Fry and trainer Gareth Smith was a nice way
to end a memorable weekend.
Meanwhile, Turn Bird struck form for trainer Steven Royes when he
came with a late flourish to beat Aged Care in the Ladbrokes Open hcp
(1200m).
Jockey Ben Kennedy continued his hot run of form with a winning double
on Zemoreya and Boom Bunny before he was edged out in a bobbing
finish on Rock The Sunrise who went down to Ready Tiger in a photo.
Kennedy rode 10 winners in August at a strike rate of 25%.
