Chartwell bobs to nail overdue win
Stable favourite Chartwell ended a frustrating few months for young
trainer Rhein Sewell when he scraped home in a thrilling three-way
finish at Cluden on Tuesday.
Chartwell bobbed right on the line to beat Stokomo and Hot Digity Boom
in the finish of the day in the Tradies Race Day BM 70 Hcp (1200m).
The margin was just a short-half head and enough to give jockey Ben
Kennedy his second win for the day and Sewell his first winner since
February.
It was a welcome change of luck for Sewell who has had an agonising
run of minor placings with his small team.
“He’s very consistent, he’s just a horse that needs the race to be run to
suit and it all broke right for him today,” Sewell said of Chartwell.
“He got into the one-one, which was the plan and had every possible
and just got there thank goodness.
“Ben’s good rider and very strong and that’s what the horse needed.
“We had a little bit of plan and we both agreed on what we’d do so we
didn’t need to say much.
“He was pretty confident. He said at track work this morning he’ll get him
home today.”
“I’ve got five or six in work at the moment. A couple that have been there
a while and a couple that have just come back from the paddock.
“It’s been a slow five or six months for us. You have to turn them over
too which I haven’t really been able to do just yet.
“A few of my better ones got injured, so hopefully they’ll be back in the
next couple of months.”
Sewell works full time as a house painter, and says the support from his
dad, former top jockey Darin, and his grandfather, training great Errol,
makes it possible to pursue his passion for training.
“If it wasn’t for Darin it’d be pretty hard. I work full time as well and it’s
long hours. You’ve got to love to do it.

“Errol comes down in the afternoons and has his say which is great.
“He’s a genius with feeds and he still has an input. And my brother
(Rorke) is in the ownership of most of them and he’s involved too.”
Trainer Graham Hughes is looking to the future with promising youngster
Briginshaw after his easy win on Tuesday.
The Doubtland gelding ran clear to win the Hygain QTIS 3/4YO Hcp in a
fast 56.19 for the 1000m.
“He’s a nice little horse. He’s actually a September foal so he’s still really
a two-year-old.
“I’ll probably put him away now and let him grow a bit and see what he
can do.
“I think he’s got a motor in him. He’s been unlucky in a few of his runs
but today he ran good time and won well.”
Hughes also won the Win News Mdn Hcp (1400m) with Okay Zoomer
and went down narrowly with Toranaga in the Bundy Rum Race Day BM
60 Hcp to the Georgie Holt-trained Rock The Sunrise.
The winning double completed a couple of big weeks for the stable after
claiming the Queensland Provincial Horse Of The Year Award with
Burraneer Buoy.
Steve Royes was stunned when stable runner Hartshorn was pipped by
Rockhampton invader Master Montaro in the Ladbrokes Open Hcp
(1000m).
Hartshorn made the pace and looked to have just lasted but was nailed
on the line in a bob of the head in a deceptive finish by the charging
Master Montaro.
“I thought he won and I was a bit stunned when it went the other way,”
Royes said.
But he didn’t have to wait long for a change of luck.
Two races later new stable addition Kickoff scored by a long neck in the
Cowboys Leagues Club BM 55 Hcp (1000m).
“She’s been here six weeks. She won her last two down there and was a
bit underdone when she ran about here first up,” Royes said.
“It looks like that form in NSW will stand up.”
